Natural Alternatives to Corticosteroids: What Works and What Is a Myth

Natural alternatives to corticosteroids do exist, but none match their anti-inflammatory strength during an acute flare. For the maintenance phase, skin barrier support and flare prevention, several natural approaches have solid scientific backing. The key is realistic expectations.

Why look for alternatives

Modern dermatology is moving towards steroid-sparing strategies — minimising corticosteroid use while maintaining disease control. Corticosteroids remain for acute flares; the maintenance phase uses non-steroidal approaches.

Alternatives with good evidence

Solid preclinical data, growing clinical evidence

CBD (cannabidiol)

Inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines and activates the endocannabinoid system in skin. NF-κB suppression, reduced IL-6 and TNF-α — anti-inflammatory effects without the structural side effects of corticosteroids. No atrophy, telangiectasia or tachyphylaxis. Safe for long-term daily use.

The Betuldiol® complex in EPIDERMA® products combines CBD with betulin from birch bark — CBD for calming inflammation, betulin for barrier restoration.

Strong preclinical data

Turmeric (curcumin)

One of the most studied natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Inhibits COX-2, LOX, NF-κB. Low oral bioavailability — resolved by combining with piperine (up to 20× increase). DermBalance Complex® contains 95% turmeric extract with piperine.

Solid clinical studies

Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA)

Precursors of anti-inflammatory mediators (resolvins and protectins). Meta-analyses show modest but consistent improvement in atopic dermatitis. DermBalance Complex® provides 500 mg omega-3 from algae per daily dose — a vegan source.

Strong evidence — EU approved claim

Zinc

Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin — approved by the European Commission (EFSA). DermBalance Complex® contains 15 mg zinc (150% NRV) as zinc picolinate.

Strong evidence — EU approved claim

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 contributes to the normal function of the immune system. DermBalance Complex® contains 2,000 IU vitamin D3 from lichen (vegan source).

DermBalance Complex® combines all the above in one product — zinc, vitamin D3, omega-3 from algae, turmeric with piperine, probiotics, nettle, milk thistle, hyaluronic acid. 90 capsules / 45 days.

What doesn't work (myths)

"Natural corticosteroids"

A misleading term. No natural substance matches the anti-inflammatory potency of synthetic corticosteroids. CBD, curcumin and others have anti-inflammatory properties but work through different mechanisms and at lower intensity. They have a different place in the treatment strategy — maintenance, prevention, support.

"Skin detox from corticosteroids"

The concept of "detoxing" has no scientific basis. Corticosteroids are eliminated through normal metabolic pathways. What can be supported is the restoration of structures damaged by corticosteroids — skin barrier, intrinsic cortisol production.

How to build a steroid-sparing strategy

Acute flares: Corticosteroid at the lowest effective potency. Maintenance phase: Emollients, Betuldiol® products (Bioactive Cream). Support from within: DermBalance Complex®. Lifestyle: Stress management, quality sleep, trigger identification.

Frequently asked questions

For the maintenance phase, yes — quality emollients and products with natural anti-inflammatory ingredients can keep skin in good condition. For acute flares, no natural alternative matches corticosteroid potency. The realistic goal is to minimise use, not eliminate it entirely.

Betuldiol® is a patented complex developed by MUDr. Skalický, combining CBD with betulin from birch bark. A dual therapeutic effect — inhibition of COX and LOX enzymes involved in inflammation.

No — it is a dietary supplement, not a medicine. It does not replace prescription treatment. It contains nutrients (zinc, vitamin D, omega-3, turmeric, probiotics) that support normal skin and immune function as a complement to topical care.

Emollients and Betuldiol® products are generally well tolerated. DermBalance Complex® is not suitable for children under 12. Always consult a paediatrician. More: TSW in children.
